Description
Blue Sky The Maiden Tower (Kız Kulesi), also known as Leander’s Tower, is a historic tower located on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey. It holds great significance and has become an iconic symbol of the city.
The tower has a rich history dating back to ancient times. It is believed to have been originally built as a defense tower during the Byzantine era, although the exact date of its construction remains uncertain. Over the centuries, it has served various purposes, including a lighthouse, a customs station, and a quarantine station.
The Maiden’s Tower gained its name from a popular legend associated with it. According to the legend, a Byzantine emperor learned of a prophecy that his daughter would be killed by a snakebite on her 18th birthday. To protect her, he isolated her on the tower, away from any snakes. However, on her 18th birthday, a snake hidden in a basket of fruit delivered to the tower bit her, causing her death.
The tower has undergone several renovations and changes throughout history due to damage caused by earthquakes and conflicts. The current structure is a result of the restoration work carried out in the 18th century during the Ottoman era.
Today, the Maiden’s Tower serves as a popular tourist attraction in Istanbul. It offers stunning panoramic views of the city skyline, the Bosphorus, and the surrounding areas. The tower houses a café and a restaurant, providing visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a meal or a cup of Turkish tea while taking in the scenic views.
In addition to its historical and architectural significance, the Maiden’s Tower has been featured in various works of literature, music, and art, making it an integral part of Istanbul’s cultural heritage.
